Jonesboro claims 12th district title under Gallegos

Jonesboro captured its 12th straight district football title in 13 seasons under Eddie Gallegos Friday.

The unbeaten Eagles played opportunistic football in posting a 62-14 win over the Lometa Hornets in the team’s home finale.

The victory featured plenty of star players, with five touchdown passes and two runs for scores in the Eagles’ seventh mercy-rule victory of the season.

The unbeaten Eagles carry a 10-0 record into the playoffs.

The Eagles will face the second place team from District 16-1A, Division I in the bi-district round. Going into that regular-season finale Nov. 5, Nueces County faced Medina with second place on the line in that district. Leakey is in first place.

The Eagles stood at No. 5 in the six-man Division I rankings through nine weeks. May is ranked No. 1 and looming in week two of the playoffs.

Also atop the rankings are No. 2 Turkey Valley, No. 3 Abbott, No. 4 Westbrook, then Jonesboro at No. 5. Defending state champion Sterling City is at No. 6.

On Friday, Caleb Christel completed six of seven passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns.

Nat Hilliker had four catches for 152 yards and two scores.

Demarcus Acoff- had two catches for 82 yards for two touchdowns.

Ian Shoaf added two receptions for 53 yards and one score.

Garrett Young was one of two passing for 12 yards and one touchdown.

Jacob Cisneros completed one pass for 50 yards.

Leading rushers were Christel with six carries for 24 yards and one score. Shoaf  had one carry for five yards and Manny Torres two carries for one yard and a score.

On defense, Hilliker and Shoaf combined for six pass breakups.

Hilliker also had four tackles and two interceptions.

Jaden Domel led in tackles with 11.

Other defensive leaders were Christel with six tackles, Cisneros four, Zach Chapman five, 1 forced fumble, DeMarcus Acoff five tackles and Shoaf three tackles.
