Basketball kicks into high gear with tournaments

Gatesville High School carried a 1-4 record heading into its Tuesday, Nov. 30 boys basketball contest against Little River Academy.

The Hornets picked up their first victory of the season with a solid showing against the Austin Navarro Vikings Nov. 23 at Gatesville before breaking for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Junior Tyler Shea scored 24 points in the 47-41 victory. The 6-4 post player has been solid rebounding and emerging as a go-to player for the Hornets.

Shea has averaged double-digit rebounds for the Hornets.

“My timing on my second jump is where a get most of them,’’ said Shea, who is a move-in from Las Vegas.

In the Hornets’ back-to-back games against Lake Belton and Navarro last week, Shea had quick starts on the boards.

In the Salado Tournament this weekend, the Hornets will open Thursday with a 9:30 a.m. game versus Salado and a 3:30 p.m. tipoff against China Spring. They will play Navarro at 5 p.m. Friday in the tournament.

The Lady Hornets (1-8) are competing in the Lorena Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

The Jonesboro and Evant girls compete in the Walnut Springs Tournament, starting Thursday. Evant is off to a quick start with senior Emiliegh Burton leading the Lady Elks inside attack.
