Martinez makes his mark at Gatesville High School

Even with all the success he has enjoyed over a storied athletic career at Gatesville High School, senior Carlo Martinez entered uncharted territory on May 11 when he competed in two events — the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter races — in the University Interscholastic League Class 4A state track and field meet in Austin.

"I have never gone to state before in track and field — this is my first time," Martinez said. "I have gone to state in cross country three times — my sophomore, junior and senior years."

What has enabled Martinez to do so much better in track this spring than in previous years?

"I just applied myself to my workouts more," he said. "I started doing everything I needed to do to become a better athlete. It's really crazy what a difference it makes when you apply yourself. I wasn't running as much last year."

Asked how much he is currently running, Martinez said, "I am running anywhere from 40 to 50 miles per week. I was running about 30 miles a week in cross country. I increased the miles so I can do well in track season."

Workouts are a solo pursuit for Martinez.

"It's something I have to do solo other than cross country," he said. "Sometimes it can be really difficult running alone. That's one of the reasons I'm really looking forward to college (he has signed to continue his athletic career at the University of Louisiana at Monroe). It's important that I mentally push myself."

What is he expecting at the state meet?

"I kind of know what the competition is like and I know it will be difficult," Martinez said. "I have to do my absolute best if I want to win."

Asked what has help[ed inspire his pursuit of excellence this spring, Martinez said, "My relationship with God has gotten a lot stronger, and it's helped me persevere."

He also credited his parents and coaches "for really helping me, encouraging me and always being there for me."

Martinez said he also appreciates the people of Gatesville for standing with him and encouraging him.

"The community gives me constant support and that helps make me want to stick it out and do my best," he said. "I want to prove to them that the support they're giving me is well worth it."
