TWENTY YEARS AGO (2003)

                --Navy Seaman Apprentice Jamie L. Pendley, daughter of Sherry Braucci of Gatesville, had completed U.S. Navy Basic training at Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Ill.

                --The Pearl High School Class of 1943 was celebrating their 60-year reunion. Those attending were Lendal Bynum Lippert, Ervin Davis, Katherine Andrew Corbin, and Wayne Fleming.

                --Shelbi Lam, the 12-year-old daughter of Jayson and Laura Lam, graduated from a 20-week modeling course held in San Antonio. She planned to audition for a prestigious expo held in Dallas.

                --John Dossey, the son of Eddie and David Bruton and Lonnie and Donna Dossey of Gatesville, had completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

                --The Haase, Powell, and Bratton families enjoyed a picnic and paddle boating on Cowhouse Creek. Grace Bratton, age 89, enjoyed paddle boating as well.

THIRTY YEARS AGO (1993)

                --Volunteer fire departments in Fort Gates, Oglesby, and Evant had acquired new fire trucks through the Rural Community Fire Protection program.

                --Ron West, county supervisor, was selected to serve as a member of the National Association of County Supervisors. West planned to travel to Washington, D.C. to address resolutions at the National Office.

                --Lieutenant Colonel Hugh J. Hall was promoted to Colonel in a ceremony held at MATES. His wife, Fran, pinned on his new rank with assistance from Brigadier General William Murphy.

                --Rev. Ernest and Mrs. Ophelia Dewald were being honored for 50 years in the Methodist Ministry. A reception was held for them at Pidcoke United Methodist Church.

                --Teena Kennedy, a 1988 graduate of Gatesville High School, had accepted a teaching position with the Japanese English Teaching Program located in Komatsu, Japan.

FORTY YEARS AGO (1983)

                --Sections of the roof of the Pecan Grove Baptist Church tabernacle had collapsed when vandals removed and made off with some 2x4 supports. Damage was estimated at more than $400.

                --Patsy Henson, an English teacher and assistant coach of girls sports at GHS resigned to accept a position in the Belton School System.

                --The GHS Stingettes attended Drill Team Camp in Georgetown. Those attending were Stephanie Gohlke, Suzanne Griffith, Alice Mueller, Roz Petty, and Phyllis Rucker.

                --The designation of certified insurance counselor had been conferred on Brad Harris, owner of Jackson & Harris Insurance Agency in Gatesville. Harris had been with the agency since 1980.

                --Deemed the town’s newest doctor, 28-year-old Tim Maynard began his medical practice at the Gatesville Medical Center. He was described as having a strong medical background and education.

FIFTY YEARS AGO (1973)

                --The Rotunda Retirement Facility was in the process of being enlarged for the third time in its history. Work had already begun on the addition due to be completed in 1974.

                --Stop signs had been installed at the intersection corners of Leon-Lutterloh Streets creating a 4-way stop. Leon Street traffic formerly had the right-of-way.

                --Five Gatesville Scouts were leaving to attend a Scout Jamboree at Farragut Park, Idaho. The boys attending were Johnny Hendricks, Danny Williams, Shawn Hanson, David Goodrich, and Charlie Yates.

                --Frances Conner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Conner, was one of 200 home economic students chosen to attend the national Future Homemakers of America national meeting in Dallas.

                --Louise Gann was retiring as a schoolteacher after 24 years in the profession. She was honored with a luncheon hosted by her co-workers at the Gatesville State School for Boys.
