TWENTY YEARS AGO (2003)

                --Several Jonesboro High School students held a bake sale to raise money for their junior-senior prom. Erin Lord and Karri Miller visited downtown merchants in Gatesville to peddle their baked goods.

                --Coryell County Judge John Hull signed a proclamation designating the week of April 27 to May 4 as Soil and Water Stewardship Week in the county.

                --Emily Bates, daughter of Bob and Ann Bates of Gatesville, was among the fall graduates of Baylor University. She received a bachelor of arts degree in communications with a minor in theater.

                --Jamie Barron, a junior at Jonesboro High School, had been selected to attend the 2003 Congressional Student Leadership Conference in Silver Spring, Maryland.

                --Lute Sullins, a freshman, and Cindy House, a senior, were presented the Tiger Award at the Oglesby Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) awards ceremony.

THIRTY YEARS AGO (1993)

                --Linda Moten was a candidate for the GISD school board. She was a nine-year resident of Gatesville and had been employed as senior warden at the Hilltop Unit.

                --Judge Larry McDonald of Gatesville had been certified at a 20-hour Justice of the Peace seminar held in Dallas. McDonald served as JP for Precinct 3 in Coryell County.

                --The Alpha Eta Chi sorority was distributing fans at the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce and Agribusiness’ annual Shivaree. Jamie Whitt, a student at GHS, drew the winning logo for the fans.

                --Floyd and Mary Woodall celebrated their 50th anniversary. Floyd Woodall and the former Mary Sydow were married May 1, 1943, in Brownwood.

                --Nancy Dowdy, one of three local golfers claimed honors as the overall winner in the ladies’ golf tournament held at the Gatesville Country Club. She was the overall high-point performer.

FORTY YEARS AGO (1983)

                --Melanie Jones was named as the valedictorian and Lisa Davis as the salutatorian for Gatesville High School’s Class of 1983. High honor boy among the seniors was Larry Bartlett.

                --Jimmy Dale Gartman and Kim McCoy won the royal title of Mr. and Miss GHS for 1983 at the ninth annual Crescent-sponsored school pageant held in the high school auditorium.

                --Gatesville twirling students of Mrs. Liz Quicksall captured a galaxy of honors in a non-sanctioned twirling contest at China Spring High School.

                --Don Glass, acting president, was elected president of the newly formed Gatesville Exchange Club. Glass and other officers were inducted by Dean Allison.

                --Smoky Moore, noted rattlesnake handler from Gatesville, was to be in charge of rattlesnake shows at Laredo’s third annual Frontier Days.

FIFTY YEARS AGO (1973)

                --Gatesville’s school board divided the old public school campus on College Hill containing 4.6 acres into four tracts for sale purposes. Bids could be made in Supt. Charles Zeigler’s office.

                --Rev. Jerry Raines was named the new pastor at Live Oak Baptist Church. Rev. Raines, his wife Sue, and their son Jayson moved to Fort Gates from Lometa where he pastored the First Baptist Church.

                --The county purchased a new 1973 model sedan for Sheriff Winfred Cummings’ department with a bid of $3,596 from Miller Motor Company.

                --Jonesboro High School’s Future Farmer pasture and range judging team placed fourth in the state contest held at Tarleton State University, advancing them to the national competition.

                --Martin Davis, a Gatesville Elementary School student and one of its standout athletes, won the state championship in the 330-yard run.
