20 YEARS AGO

(2001)

Coryell County Judge John Hull was elected as a first vice president of the Texas Association of Regional Councils.

Nominations were being accepted for the Norris Graves Award that is presented each year during the Gatesville High School Alumni Banquet.

Nicholaus Pantleo, 10-month-old son of Patrick and Lecia Pantleo, enjoyed assisting his father in directing the Evant School band at their Homecoming game. Patrick Pantleo started the band program at Evant two years prior.

At halftime of the Evant homecoming game, Shoshana Perkins was named homecoming queen, and Mikey Orlando was named homecoming king. Both were seniors at Evant High School.

Members of the Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8230 were staying busy with various projects both locally and state-wide. In September, members recognized "Hospital Month" by sending a donation to the state auxiliary headquarters to help hospitalized veterans.

Descendants of John Byrom and Molly Yows Byrom were planning to meet for a family reunion at Hay Valley Baptist Church.

30 YEARS AGO

(1991)

Gatesville High School planned to announce the 1991 Homecoming Queen during halftime of the Gatesville-La Vega football game at McKamie Stadium. The nominees, all seniors, were Amie Lanham, Brooke Gallier and Kandi King.

The Annual Gatesville Firemen's Harvest Fest drew a large crowd to the Courthouse Square with over 600 plates of barbecue sold to hungry customers.

The Gatesville Senior Center was holding its annual Soup Supper at the Gatesville Senior Center. For $2.50, diners were being served soup, garlic bread, crackers, coffee, or tea.

Bobbie B. Bush was honored after retiring from MATES. Bush, a member of the National Guard since March of 1957, had worked at MATES since June 1,1961. He began his career there as a Storekeeper and finished as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Repair Leader.

The Coryell County Museum, in conjunction with the National Bank and Guaranty Bank and Trust Co, was sponsoring a Quilt Block Contest. Only pre-washed cotton fabric featuring a pieced or appliqued "star" was to be accepted.

The Optimist Club of Morgan’s Point Resort of Belton awarded their first-ever "Friend of Youth Award" to Pam Stephens, a former Gatesville resident and graduate of Gatesville High School.

40 YEARS AGO

(1981)

Joe R. Skelton, second-in-command at the local post office for 17 years, was officially named Gatesville's new postmaster. The 60-year-old Skelton became the 20th postmaster in the 127-year history of the Gatesville post office.

Danny Loerwald, a member of the Gatesville High School coaching staff, picked off the $25 prize in the Gatesville Messenger’s football contest as a repeat winner. He scored first back in 1979.

Gatesville golfers made names for themselves in the annual partnership low ball tournament held at Lampasas, where Gene Arnold and Ray Sommerfeld teamed to win the first flight and Larry Langston shot a hole-in-one.

The new pastor of Gatesville's First Presbyterian Church was Rev. Cline Davis of Austin, who was appointed to the post and preached his First sermon as the church's pastor shortly after his appointment.

Gatesville volunteer firemen Gary Barba and Bob Miller helped Gatesville Primary School youngsters climb aboard a fire truck for a free ride around town.

Nelton Long Jr., a Levita archery enthusiast, killed a 3-point buck on the first day of the 1981 archery season on deer in Coryell County.

50 YEARS AGO

(1971)

Michael J. (Mike) Feary, son of a law enforcement officer and himself a former highway patrolman with the Texas Department of Public Safety, was named as Gatesville's new police chief.

Robert Earl Ashby, Gatesville fireman, was promoted to the office of third vice president of the Central Texas Firemen and Fire Marshals Association. He had been serving as the association's fourth vice president.

J. K. Hamilton, a state highway patrolman stationed in Gatesville, was participating in the 10th National Police Pistol Championships held in Jackson, Mississippi.

Gene Chitwood was elected president of the Gatesville Riding Club for 1971-72 during a meeting of the club members.

The Ranger Junior College Choir sang special music for a service at the First Methodist Church of Ranger. Dennis Fleetwood of Gatesville was a member of the RJC Choir and participated in concert tours and programs throughout the 1971-72 season.

Seventeen uniformed riders of the Coryell County Sheriff's Posse travelled to Waco to ride in the downtown parade heralding the opening of the Heart O' Texas Fair and Rodeo.
