Join us May 2-8 as we celebrate the first Children’s Book Week of 2022. Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, young people across the country participate by attending events at schools, libraries, bookstores, celebrating at home, and engaging with book creators both online and in person. The 2022 Children’s Book Week will take place during two dedicated weeks of celebration – May 2-8 and November 7-13.
Children’s Book Week originated in the belief that children’s books and literacy are life-changers. In 1913, Franklin K. Matthiews, the librarian of the Boy Scouts of America, began touring the country to promote higher standards in children’s books. He proposed creating a Children’s Book Week, which would be supported by all interested groups: publishers, booksellers and librarians.
Matthiews enlisted two important allies: Frederic G. Melcher, the visionary editor of Publishers Weekly who believed that “a great nation is a reading nation,” and Anne Carroll Moore, the Superintendent of Children’s Works at the New York Public Library and a major figure in the library world. With the help of Melcher and Moore, in 1916, the American Booksellers Association and the American Library Association sponsored a Good Book Week with the Boy Scouts of America. In 2008, Children’s Book Week moved from November to May, and now we celebrate twice. The 100th anniversary of Children’s Book week was celebrated in 2019.

Monday, May 2 – 3 p.m., Fiber Arts for Everyone – Are you experienced in your medium, just beginning or want to learn? Come gather, visit, and work on projects. Share ideas and expertise. Knitters, crocheters, quilters and all other forms of fiber artists are welcome.
Tuesday, May 3 – 6 p.m., Mystery Book Club – The group will be discussing “A Borrowing of Bones” and “Blind Search” by Paula Munier.
Tuesday, May 10 – 6 p.m.,Coryell County Genealogical Society. Everyone is welcome.
Monday, May 16 – Fiber Arts for Everyone
Tuesday, May 17 – 6 p.m., Colors & Coffee coloring group for adults.
Tuesday, May 24 – 10 a.m., Books Sandwiched In Book Club
Every Wednesday – 11 a.m., Storytime. Join us for stories, songs and crafts! Groups for pre-K and elementary ages.
Every Wednesday – 1 p.m., Mad Matters plarn party. Learn to crochet plastic grocery bags into sleep mats for the homeless. The bags are cut into strips and joined together to make “plarn.”
To find the latest great reads, come by the library. We also have a great selection of eBooks and eAudio available in our digital collection that you can check out with the Libby by Overdrive app. We can also borrow titles from other libraries all across the United States, so if we don’t have the book you need, we can most likely get it through interlibrary loan.
