Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024 at the Gatesville Church of Christ with Minister Justin Hall officiating.  Interment will follow at Restland Cemetery.  Van’s family received visitors from 5 - 7 p.m. on Friday at Scott’s Funeral Home.

Van was born March 23, 1946 to Dewey Afton and Beulah Mae Bartlett Necessary in Gatesville, Texas. He attended schools in Levita and Gatesville, graduating from Gatesville High School in 1964.

He married Jackie Sharon Chappell on Aug. 26, 1967. They began their married life in Dallas, where they met lifelong friends Charles and Nancy Cain. He worked for Dallas Power & Light. They moved to McGregor in 1968 where he worked for McLennan Electric Coop. In 1971, they moved to Gatesville, and he continued his lineman career at Fort Hood, finally retiring after 30 years of service in 2001.

He loved football, baseball, rodeo, and country music. He especially enjoyed weekend trips to Texas Aggie football games and tailgating “the Gatesville Way.” His greatest love was his family. He never missed his kids’ or grandkids’ activities.

His actions revealed his love. A clear example of this was the hot sauce that he improved over the years and shared with so many people he cared about.

He was baptized Dec. 1, 1968 and was a faithful member of the Gatesville Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry Necessary; and sister, Fae Braziel.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; sons, Greg Necessary and wife, Misti, Bret Necessary and wife, Amanda; goddaughter, Suzy Howey and husband, Brian; God-grandchildren, Austin Zook, Ashleigh Smith and husband, Coby, and their four children, Scarlett, Taylor, Miley, and Waylon; grandchildren, Alleigh Necessary, Aydan Necessary, Grayson Necessary, and Bryson Necessary; brothers, Dwaine Necessary, Bruce Necessary and wife, Becky; and sister-in-law, Audine Necessary.
