Construction crews have begun a road overlay project on State Highway 36 that will cause various lane closures throughout its duration, according to a press release by the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Waco District.

The roadwork takes place on SH 36 from U.S. Highway 84 to FM 931 in Flat, which includes mill and inlay operations for road surface restoration. TxDot states in the release that it will enhance road safety and improve driver experience.

The $8.9 million project started in mid-February. It is scheduled to be completed by spring 2025.

Due to an influx of visitors for the Great American Eclipse on April 8, traffic congestion is expected to be a concern on major highways in the Central Texas area. A spokesperson for TxDOT’s Waco District said they are working with industry partners to ensure that traffic-related disruptions are minimized, including no temporary lane closures.

TxDOT encourages motorists to slow down, eliminate distractions, and buckle up when driving through work zones.
