Oglesby Boy's Handle Aquilla

The Tigers basketball team defeated Aquilla by a score of 60-32 last week in a game coach Larry Williamson said his team was in sync throughout.

“The team performed well,” Williamson said. “We rebounded the ball exceptionally well and had great ball and player movement offensively.”

The Tigers had a few strong individual performances in the game as well.

Holdyn Goff had 17 points and 18 rebounds, while Evan Williamson scored 15 points with five steals.

Alex Castillo finished the game with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Oglesby moved to 7-1 in district competition with the victory over the Cougars.

Lady Elks Lose to Abbott

The Evant girls basketball team came up short last Friday, losing to Abbott by a score of 50-34.

Molly Waldrum scored 10 points for Evant in the loss to lead the team in scoring in the game.

Izzy Gandy led the team with 11 rebounds, and Bree Ramirez led the team in assists with five for the Lady Elks.

Gandy (eight points), Luwi Rodriguez (seven points), Ramirez (six points), and Brinlea Bates (two points) all contributed for Evant.

Gatesville Wrestling Team Gears Up for District

The Hornets girls had a strong showing in their final tune up before the district meet this past week, and coach Robert Clater, Jr. said both teams competed well against Salado.

“At our dual against Salado, our girls neared a clean sweep against them, winning all but one match up,” Clater said. “Our boys’ team is a large group of rookies and lost to Salado, but each outing they show improvement, and I look forward to seeing their growth.”

The Salado dual was important for another reason, as two of Gatesville's best wrestlers were recognized for their achievements and contributions to the program.

“We recognized seniors Elaina Knobloch and Brianna Allen for our last home match of the season,” Clater said. “Brianna ends the regular season with a 14-5 season and Elaina, 12-6.”

Lady Eagles Continue to Play Well

The Jonesboro girls basketball team won its ninth consecutive district game last Tuesday and remains undefeated in district competition this season.

The Lady Eagles defeated Oglesby, and coach Chris Simon said it was another strong all-around effort from his team.

“Our game against Oglesby on Tuesday went well,” Simon said on Saturday. “We played much better this time than last time we played them. We had a good performance from our bench players. I felt we played a great team game. We won 59-21 to move to 9-0 in district with a big game coming up Tuesday against Aquilla. I’m proud of how the girls are playing, and we are going to continue rolling and keep up the momentum.”

Simon had four strong performances in the game from his team, with Ella Gustin leading Jonesboro in scoring with 25 points and finished the game with four steals.

Lynlee Deats also had a strong game, with eight points, seven assists, and three steals, and Ally Thorman also had eight points for the Lady Eagles against Oglesby.

Destini Ranaghan finished the game with seven points for Jonesboro.

Evant Loses Tough One to Abbott

The Elks lost to Abbott last Friday by a score of 72-40 in a game that was tied 7-7 early before the Panthers went on a 9-0 run.

Jacob Turner was the top scorer for the Elks with 18 points in the game and Evant was 4-9 in three-point shots.

Cash Stanford collected 12 rebounds to lead the way for the Elks in the game.

Evant also had contributions from Tanner Manville (nine points), Cooper Standford (six points), Cash Stanford (four points), and Texan White (four points) against Abbott.

Oglesby Girls Come Up Short

The Lady Tigers basketball team lost to Aquilla last week by a score of 60-24, and coach Dylan Segundo said his team looked pretty good early on.

“We started off the game well, which is something we’ve been trying to focus on,” Segundo said. “The girls played hard and got after it defensively, but we just couldn’t get enough going offensively.”

A bright spot in the game for Oglesby offensively was the play of Presley Robinson, who led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 12 points.
