Oglesby Beats Evant in Nail Biter
The Lady Elks basketball team came up just short against Oglesby last Friday, losing by a score of 41-40 in a game that included 10 lead changes.
Evant led the game 22-20 at halftime, and after trailing 33-28, Oglesby went on an 11-point run to take the lead.
Oglesby coach Dylan Segundo said he was impressed with how his team hung in there.
“The girls played really hard and bought into the game plan, which I am very pleased with,” Segundo said. “I thought we could have shot the ball better, but that’s part of basketball. It was a big win for us, which hopefully can give us a boost for the rest of the season.”
Segundo said he had a couple of standout performances in the game.
“Presley Robinson led us in scoring with 14,” Segundo said. “Zarah (Whisehart) had seven steals to help big as well. I do want to give a big shout out to Kelsey Ritchie and Maddison Smith. We tasked them with a tough defensive assignment, and they handled it very well.”
For Evant, Molly Waldrum led the Lady Elks in scoring with 14 points.
Evant finished with 37 rebounds as a team and Bree Ramirez led the Lady Elks with 11 rebounds. Luwi Rodriguez led the team with six assists, and Waldrum led the team with four blocks.
Ramirez (13 points), Rodriguez (7 points), Brinlea Bates (4 points), and Izzy Gandy (2 points) all contributed for Evant in the game.
Jonesboro on Hot Streak
The Lady Eagles basketball team defeated Aquilla by a score of 35-31 on Friday night to remain unbeaten in district play, and coach Chris Simon said he anticipated a tough contest.
“I knew going into the game last night that it would be intense and Aquilla would be ready to play,” Simon said on Saturday. “We came out strong in the first quarter, had a horrible second quarter; regrouped at halftime, and finished with a win.
“It was a crazy game, tempers flared, back and forth. I felt we could have played better in some instances, but, sometimes, you have those type of games. It was an ugly win, but I’m proud of how my girls battled.”
Simon said the victory was a team effort and that all five starters contributed in different ways with a little help from the bench.
Jonesboro improved to 4-0 in district with the win.
“I would say we are leaning on our defense to get us through the games,” Simon said. “We have been playing better defense lately. Also playing as a team, not really one star player, we are all chipping in in many different ways. I’m proud of how the girls are playing, but we have to be ready for next week. Can’t have a letdown against Evant, which is a rivalry game, or Cranfills Gap.”
Gatesville Earns Two Medals at CenTex Tourney
The Gatesville wrestling program had two athletes medal at the CenTex Tournament this past weekend, and coach Robert Clater, Jr. said the competition is a good opportunity for his team to prepare for two important meets later in the season.

Overall, Gatesville Girls placed 15th as a team out of 48 with a 12-15 record, and the boy's team placed 33rd overall out of 42 programs, with a 3-8 overall record

Hornets Win Big Against Brownwood
The Gatesville boys basketball team handled Brownwood last Friday, defeating the Lions by a score of 97-56.
“We played a very good game versus Brownwood,” coach Brit Campbell said. “All eight guys played huge minutes for us. We guarded them well and had their best player frustrated largely in part to Collyn Coleman and Logan Biggs staying in and guarding him. We had four guys in double figures: Charlie Winkler, West Allman, Kase Cox, and Rex Owen, and every player scored for us. We played great in rhythm all game.
Charlie Winkler led the way for Gatesville with 36 points, while West Allman, Kase Cox and Evan McCracken all scored double digits in points.
Oglesby Boy's Defeat Elks
The Tigers basketball team beat Evant by a score of 64-34 last week, and coach Larry Williamson said he had a few players step up in the win.
“Kyler Fossett was the leading scorer with 28 points and eight rebounds,” Williamson said. “Holdyn Goff had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Evan Williamson had 11 points and four steals."
“We are getting better, but since we had a successful football season we have played less than 10 games right now,” Williamson said. “We are performing well and with more practices and games, I feel like we well start performing better.”
Lady Hornets Lose to La Vega
The Gatesville girls basketball team lost a tough one to Waco La Vega last Friday by a score of 88-17.
