Pearl News March 8, 2023

The Pearl Cottage Bookstore reports that they enjoyed a very busy day on Saturday, March 4. Linda, Corlisa and Kay said that they had a wonderful time visiting with some old friends and making some new ones, too.

These ladies had worked extremely hard rearranging and adding new items to the store before they opened on that Saturday. Kay now has dishpan hands, Linda has a “crick in her back,” and Corlisa has supported the local gas stations as she kept the road hot driving in for workdays. Many items from the Self estate had been included in the March 4 sale, thanks to the generosity of Mandy and Rick Self. The Self estate sale benefiting the Pearl Church of Christ Scholarship fund has come to an end, however. But, because of the Selfs’ thoughtfulness and caring, the scholarship fund will be able to provide many more local scholarships, and the Book Cottage will be able to continue supporting their local charities. We are so thankful for Rick and Mandy, and we pray for the Lord’s richest blessings over them. Rick is the son of Carrie and Harold Self, who lived in that sweet house for many years. Wouldn’t they be overjoyed to know how much their estate has blessed Pearl?

Pearl Church of Christ has announced its annual Vacation Bible School Dates – drum roll, please – May 29 through June 2, 9 a.m. until noon. Please share this information with all of your friends and family. Everyone is welcome!

From “The Pleasure and Profit Club” on March 15, 1934: “The Club met with Odell Reynolds. A quilt was pieced, and several dish towels were hemmed. Miss Mae Basham gave an interesting talk on food. The president called the house to order. The minutes were read and approved. The roll was called, noting the absence of seven members. 55 cents was paid in for dues, and 10 cents was paid out for needles; 35 cents for thread, pins and 1/2 yard of cloth; and 17 cents for gasoline, making a total of 62 cents paid out for expenses, leaving a total of $2.18 in treasury. Bonnie, Lottie and Coma were appointed to the sick committee. It was decided that we would send Miss Mamie a card of sympathy, even though it was not exactly what we would love to send. The pattern for our club dresses was decided on. Bonnie and Bessie Early are to get the material, buttons and patterns for the dresses. We adjourned to meet all day March 29 with Mrs. Fred Robinson.” (I don’t know about you, but I would love to travel back in time to have been at one of those meetings!)

This week’s Bible verse comes from Deuteronomy 6:6-7: “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (NIV)
