Museum Spotlight

Bookstore at Coryell Museum

Posted

Over the years, even dating back to Gatesville’s early days, bookstores in the community have come and gone…mostly gone. During the computer age, and with the creation of such devices known as Kindles, eReaders, tablets, and e-books, the need for bookstores has declined. Believe it or not, Gatesville does have a small bookstore located in the gift shop at the Coryell Museum and Historical Center.

The bookstore serves as a treasure trove of knowledge, offering museum visitors the opportunity to examine books that complement the museum’s exhibitions and themes.

There are approximately 100 books written by local authors or authors delving into the history of Texas. In addition to books by local authors, there is a large selection of books penned by historians further connecting the museum to surrounding communities and showcasing regional talent.

The books in topic range from historical fiction, family cookbooks, military history, family histories, law enforcement, Texas history, and a great deal of local history books.

Beyond its role as a retail space, the Coryell Museum also serves as a gathering place for book signings, author talks, club meetings, and other literary events.

Whether patrons of the museum are seeking to expand their knowledge, support local authors, or simply enjoy a quiet moment surrounded by interesting books, the bookstore at the Coryell Museum gift shop offers a unique and enriching experience that is not to be missed.

Visitors are welcome to drop by the museum located at 718 E. Main to browse through the books and to view the museum’s massive spur collection. Coryell Museum and Historical Center is open Wednesday through Saturday, as is the gift shop. Yearly, Coryell Museum memberships are $20 for singles, $30 for families, and $40 for businesses, which includes free admission to the museum, plus four newsletters. Of course, large and small donations are welcome at all times.

Coryell Museum offers area schools and tour groups a delightful, guided tour through the museum with docents at many exhibits. Call the museum at 254-865-5007 to plan a visit.
