Jack Maxwell, a former educator and coach for Gatesville Independent School District, will be honored with a dedication ceremony at the Athletic Complex on Friday, March 21, at 4:30 p.m.
Maxwell attended Gatesville ISD for his entire public-school education and participated in each sport from seventh through 12th grade with football and track being his primary sports.
He later attended Tarleton State University and Sam Houston State University (SHSU) before being drafted by the United States Army in the fall of 1966. After two years of service, he returned to SHSU and graduated in 1970 with his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with a minor in Biology.
That same year, in 1970, he began his teaching career at the State School as a physical education teacher. He then transitioned to the junior high school at Palacios ISD where he was a science teacher and coach for three years.
In 1973, he returned to Gatesville ISD at the junior high school as a teacher and coach where he primarily taught science along with coaching football and track for the rest of his career.
Maxwell would become the junior high boys’ athletic coordinator and was a part of the 2000 state championship football program. He later retired from the classroom in 2004 but worked part-time in the maintenance department until December of 2020.
In total, he has served over 50 years in education and was inducted into the Gatesville ISD Hall of Fame.
The dedication ceremony will be held on Marshall Street in front of the weight room. Gatesville High School is located at 205 Lovers Lane.
