Maxwell honored at dedication service

On Friday, March 21, former educator and coach, Jack Maxwell, was honored with a dedication ceremony held on Marshall Street in front of the weight room.

Maxwell attended Gatesville ISD for his entire public-school education. After teaching and coaching in other locations, Maxwell returned to Gatesville ISD in 1973 as a junior high teacher where he primarily taught science along with coaching football and track.
In total, Maxwell served over 50 years in education and was inducted into the Gatesville ISD Hall of Fame.

At the dedication ceremony, GISD superintendent, Dr. Barrett Pollard said, “This memorial to Jack Maxwell now encompasses the whole athletic complex. The first thing you think of is his coaching, he cared about the boys, he was so excited and compassionate on the side lines – he would run down the side lines. He was also a great teacher. We have fond memories of sixth grade science. We would make rockets and launch them, and that was pretty cutting-edge for the 80s and 90s. We learned a lot from him.”

Others who honored Maxwell during the dedication ceremony were former coach Guy Dean, former student athlete Don Ford, and GHS Athletic Director, Rickey Phillips.

Dr. Pollard ended the ceremony by saying, “We really feel that this honor is very appropriate, and that Coach Maxwell has earned this and he is a servant leader, a good Christian man, and we hope he has many more years to enjoy this recognition.”
