Library temporarily closes after finding water damage on books

The City of Gatesville temporarily closed the Gatesville Public Library on Thursday after a patron found two books with water damage on the shelves, according to a media release distributed by the city.

The release states that the discovery comes after other small areas of water damage were found on some of the sheet rock this past week. The city will work with its contractor to inspect the building and its contents in a “thorough manner” starting on Friday through Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The city said the cause of the water damage is likely related to roof damage that the building received during the severe weather events that occurred in the spring.

The library plans to remain closed through at least Tuesday. Once the testing and inspection are complete, City Manager Brad Hunt will provide an update on library operations.

“We understand the library is an important part of daily life in Gatesville and we are taking all possible proactive steps to ensure the well-being of our library staff and patrons,” Hunt said in the release. “While there have been no reported instances of illness or discomfort, the unknown extent of water damage is the reason for this pre-emptive testing, inspection, and any necessary further action.”
