Every week, local Billy Landua and his loyal dog, Smokey, make their way to the Senior Center, spreading joy and brightening the day of everyone they cross paths with.
Landua has had Smokey since she was a puppy, and she is now two years old. For over a year-and-a-half, the duo has become beloved regulars at the center, offering companionship and smiles to staff and the congregation alike.
The pair's visits have become a cherished part of the Senior Center's weekly routine, with many seniors eagerly anticipating their arrival, especially Nutrition Supervisor, Camilla Edge.
Landua said that once he began going to the center, Edge started taking Smokey food outside every day and would bring her a little treat as well.
Edge said, “I love that dog and I take her something to eat every day they are here.”
She said that she makes Smokey a small cup of whatever is on the menu for that day and will take it out to Landua’s truck to feed her.
“She knows when I am coming with food; it is like a routine,” she said.
Smokey, a gentle and affectionate dog, is the perfect companion for Landua, while bringing comfort to the seniors who often look forward to their weekly visits.
“She likes to ride in the pickup, so I let her jump in, and she rides along,” Landua said. “We make a circle around Gatesville, and she barks at nearly every truck, school bus, or van that goes by.”
The bond between Landua and Smokey is truly heartwarming, and she not only provides him with a sense of purpose, but also brings comfort and emotional support to everyone around them.
Landua’s visits serve as a reminder of the deep bonds that can form between people and animals and how the love of a pet can create lasting connections in a community.
As long as the duo continue their weekly visits, the Senior Center will remain a little brighter, thanks to their unwavering friendship and the warmth they bring to everyone they encounter.
