Janice Wrae Brown, age 91, of Gatesville, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 10, 2024.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Pidcoke Baptist Church with Pastor Don McConnaughhay officiating. Interment followed at Pidcoke Cemetery.
Janice was born in West Liberty, Kentucky on Dec. 23, 1932 to William “Bill” and Armelva “Ira” Combs. Janice attended and graduated from Morgan County (Kentucky) public schools. She later went on to receive an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Central Texas College in Killeen.
Janice married the love of her life, Harold E. “Gene” Brown, in 1956. They were married 49 years before his passing in 2006. After Janice and Gene got married, they lived in Germany for a time while Gene was in the Army and stationed there. In 1958, they moved to Pidcoke, while Gene served in the Army at Fort Hood.
Janice was a long-time employee of the Texas Youth Commission (TYC) at the Gatesville State School for Boys, serving as a matron before later becoming a correctional officer at the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) Gatesville Unit. She retired from the TDC on Aug. 31, 1990.
Janice was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a hard worker, and a generous and kind friend to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Brown, and by her brothers, Stanley Wells, Darvin Wells, and Jimmy Wells. She is survived by a sister, Betty Lykins, of West Liberty, Kentucky, and sons William E. Brown and wife, Ann, of Houston, and Glenn T. Brown and wife, Carol, of League City. She is also survived by six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 14s great-great grandchildren.
