As the Gatesville boys’ basketball team tries to earn a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive season, the Hornets will rely on senior shooting guard West Allman to help lead the way.
Allman has been a top scorer for Gatesville this season, but with tough district competition and contentious games night in and night out, coach Brit Campbell said he has some definite goals for his senior who also plays forward for the Hornets to help get them there.
“I want to get him into the playoffs with him helping to lead the way,” Campbell said. “And once we get in, I want him to help lead us by bringing home some gold balls.”
For Allman, 18, the season is going well, and while there are still a few wrinkles to iron out, he is optimistic about the direction in which his team is headed.
“Things are good,” Allman said. “We still have stuff to improve on, but overall, we're good.”
The Gatesville senior also plays football and competes in the high jump in track and field and when it comes to what he tries to bring to the team, it consists of two things.
“Leadership and winning games,” Allman said.
The Gatesville basketball player has had to overcome some health issues throughout his career and said his biggest interests are movies and shoes.
Allman said that it was LeBron James who originally inspired him to play the sport of basketball and said his goals for this season are two-fold.
“We want to make a run-in playoff and be district champs,” Allman said.
Campbell said that in addition to his ability as a basketball player, Allman provides the Hornets with several intangibles that help the team continue to function at a high level.
“He brings experience, leadership, confidence, and he helps keep our team chemistry strong,” Campbell said.
The Hornets are right in the thick of the playoff hunt in District 23, and Campbell said whatever success the Hornets have this season, Allman will have certainly done his part.
“West is having a great season thus far,” Campbell said. “He is such a complete player that can do so many things on the court from guarding different types of players on defense, controlling the rebounds on both ends and scoring inside, attacking the rim, or outside hitting shots.”
