Coryell Health is hosting a month-long fundraiser during April called, “Every Sole Deserves a Sock,” in efforts to collect new pairs of socks for patients.
The fundraiser aims to help with numerous health problems that can result from not having or wearing socks, such as friction, frostbite and neuropathy.
Friction
Bony parts of the foot can become irritated if socks are not worn. Friction leads to thickened skin, which results in painful calluses and corns.
Frostbite
Socks provide warmth and help minimize the constriction of blood vessels, which makes toes susceptible to damage by the cold. Severe frostbite can result in amputation.
Neuropathy
Some people lose nerve function and cannot feel thickened skin or irritations. If this skin breaks down, it can cause a non-healing wound called an ulcer. Ulcers can become infected and can even infect bones. Bone infections can also result in amputation. Patients affected by neuropathy include those with diabetes, alcohol abuse problems, and those prescribed certain medications.
New pairs of socks can be donated to Coryell Health’s Wound Care Clinic, building three, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Coryell Health’s Wound Care Clinic, building three, is located at 224 Memorial Drive Suite 2.
