Evant ISD athlete Bree Ramirez sets goal for state

Posted

Evant High School athlete Bree Ramirez competes at a high level in three different sports.

Ramirez, 18, is currently in the midst of track and field season, and coach JoAnna Vaden, who was also Ramirez's volleyball coach, said her senior discus and shot-put thrower is having another good season early on.

"Bree has started off this season strong,” Vaden said. “In her first meet, she threw the discus 98' 8, which is a personal best and lines up to be in the top five in our region. She also throws the shot put and is working on a personal best there as well."

But the accolades go beyond shot put and discus throwing circles.

Ramirez was selected as the Offensive MVP this year in volleyball and received Academic All-District honors, as well as Academic All-State honors from THSCA and TGCA.

In basketball, she was a second-team All-District and an Academic All-District.

For Ramirez, the drive to compete is innate.

"I’ve always had a love for sports, whether it’s the competition, the challenge, the drive to succeed, or just spending time with friends,” Ramirez said. “It all comes together to create something I truly enjoy. While I have a special place for volleyball and track, I don’t want to take away from basketball, which I also enjoy. Over the years, I’ve learned that each sport complements the others—not just physically, but mentally as well, preparing me for future challenges."

The biggest challenge she has faced in competition, however, is herself.

"They say you can be your worst critic, which I do believe is true,” Ramirez said. “I challenge myself to get better through the criticism, fueling my desire to want more and do more."

And the Evant High School senior does plenty.

In track and field, Vaden said Ramirez brings a strong work ethic, dedication, and desire to succeed. “Each year she has improved her performances in both the shot put and discus,” Vaden said. “She also brings her leadership to the program. In each sport and throughout the four years that I have had the privilege of coaching Bree in volleyball and track, she has always had an exceptional work ethic and has led by example."

In addition to volleyball, basketball, and track, Ramirez is also vice president of the student council and the National Honor Society.

She also participates in UIL academics, and this past year she earned her certification to be a nurse assistant.

On top of all of that, she holds down a part-time job at Coryell Health.

Ramirez said her goal for this coming season is to make it to state.

“I also want to hit a personal best every meet,” Ramirez said. “I want to go above and beyond for my very last season of track.”

The Evant senior said she was initially drawn to the sport of track and field as a way to prepare for the next volleyball season, but over time, her perspective shifted.

“Now, track serves as a way to mentally prepare for the challenges of college,” Ramirez said. “Once I step into the ring, it becomes a mental game. All the practices, drills, and weight room sessions can be for nothing if I’m not mentally prepared to compete. What I find most appealing about track is that my only true opponent is myself - it's always me versus me."

Ramirez said she really enjoys science and hopes to become a nurse anesthetist.

Vaden said Ramirez is exactly the kind of athlete that coaches want to have on their teams.

"Just to have the opportunity to coach Bree and watch her grow and mature into a wonderful young lady has been a great joy,” Vaden said. “To have an athlete who is dedicated to improving herself, her team, and the programs that she is in is amazing. She does not set limits for herself or her team and is so very coachable."

Vaden said Ramirez should be proud of the legacy she has left at Evant.

"Bree is a senior and has been on varsity for volleyball, basketball, and track all four years she has been in high school,” Vaden said. “All three programs have been very successful. Volleyball and basketball have made the playoffs every year, and, in track, she has advanced to the regional track meet the last three years. She has shown younger girls in these programs how to work hard and inspired them to want to be successful not only on the playing field but also in the classroom.

“She understands that no matter the wins and losses, hard work, dedication, desire, and effort can help you not only on the court or in the ring, but in life as well."
