The program for the Sept. 10 meeting of the Coryell County Genealogical Society will be presented by Sherry Lawrence, who will speak on the Historical Texas Sites Atlas.
The Texas Historical Commission maintains this state-wide atlas on their website, and it is a wonderful resource for historians, genealogists, and Texas travelers. The site has historical descriptions and locations pinpointed on a Texas map, and Coryell County has over one hundred identified sites. Historical sites include cemeteries, archeological investigations, buildings, and other entities that have received Texas Historical Markers.
While the atlas is a valuable research tool, the main purpose of the information is to provide protection to historical sites that are in proposed construction or land development areas. For this reason, the THC is updating the atlas and has solicited the assistance of the Coryell County Historical Commission. It is hoped that expanding an interest in the atlas will bring more Coryell County historical sites under the protective umbrella of state law.
The public is invited to attend this important meeting at the Gatesville Public Library, 6 p.m.
