Volleyball drills start with energy

The volleyball season officially started Wednesday with some uptempo workouts for teams in Coryell County.

The dean of the area coaches, Rickey Phillips of Gatesville, had the Hornets going full speed in drills led by junior Sydney Mundkowsky and senior Sage Carson.

The returning varsity players were suited up in the team’s yellow jerseys with almost 50 players battling for spots on the varsity, junior varsity and freshmen teams. It is early and coaches are looking for players that will fi t into the game plan.

For Gatesville, they know they have plenty of firepower and Mundkowsky and Carson are heavy hitters at the net. Mundkowsky said she spent the summer playing in a sand league in Belton. The 6-2 middle hitter looked impressive at the start of drills with her play and leadership. Phillips also has some solid candidates in Daci Segraves and Marlee Ward to fi ll key spots.
