Summer workouts start June 8
After a long-awaited period of uncertainty, high school coaches and athletes can begin restricted summer workouts starting June 8.
The University Interscholastic League is allowing Texas schools to conduct coach-led sessions under guidelines set forth by the UIL, Texas Education Agency and Texas State Department of Health Services. The initial workouts, for high school and junior high girl-boy athletes, will include strength and conditioning workouts as well as sport-specific skill sessions.
‘‘It won’t be a full return to normal, but it's a great step in that direction,’’ Gatesville ISD athletic director Rickey Phillips said. ‘‘Our coaches and athletes have been anxiously awaiting this opportunity. Some of our kids have been doing things through our virtual sessions and online posted workouts, and others have been doing their own workouts to try and keep in decent shape. I can't guarantee that all of our student-athletes have been doing this, but I know there are many that have been doing some types of exercises, workouts, staying active.’’
