Senior Coble shines like silver

Jonesboro athlete gives it her best in battle with Rocksprings standout

Keegan Coble has earned five medals in Austin over a three-year run as one of the top weight throwers in the state. It’s all been in Class 1A and it’s all been while sharing the discus and shot put rings with Zoe Burleson. Burleson of Rocksprings is unsurpassed in the events. She’s won the gold five of six times and rewritten the discus record three straight years at state. “I feel blessed to be here,’’ Burleson said. “I know when I come here that Keegan is always going to be here and the competition is going to be tough.’’ Coble, who started throwing the discus when she was a seventh grader, has devoted a lot of time to throwing the discus and shot. It paid off Friday when she threw some of her best throws. “I’m happy. I threw my best,’’ Coble said. “That’s what I came here to do. I bettered my throw from last year in the discus (at state) and I had a PR in the shot. I would have liked it if I hadn’t had that foul.’’ Coble had her best throw early when she let the discus fly for 145 feet and nine inches on her second attempt. Burleson had a record 156-10 effort on her fi rst throw. Coble said it has been rewarding to keep getting better every year. She said throwing the discus comes down to a lot of things. “Technique is the main thing,’’ she said. “You can have somebody real strong and if they don’t have the technique it doesn’t matter.’’
