Locals earn state berths at regional
It’s been 40 years since Queen recorded “We are the Champions,” but that mantle was quite fitting for local entrants in the Region III-4A and Region IV-1A track and field meets Friday and Saturday at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville.
Jonesboro raised the volume on the Freddie Mercury classic quite a bit with Ella Antilla and Robert Robuck claiming three gold medals each and the Eagles winning the boys team title in the IV-1A meet and the girls placing second behind Barksdale Nueces Canyon.
They were joined at the apex of the winner’s stand by Gatesville senior long sprinter Jordan Brock and the Evant boys 4x400 relay foursome of Joaquin Martinez, Colton Mc- Cann, Jeremiah Marwitz and Ethan Martin.
Also earning trips to the UIL state meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus in Austin on May 11-12 were Jonesboro’s Alex Sarmiento in two events, Andy Sarmiento in one and Keegan Coble in one. Evant’s Martin also garnered an individual spot in addition to the relay.
The top two finishers in each of the 68 events on the Huntsville program earned trips to Austin along with the best third-place showing from the four regional meets in each event.
