It’s kickoff time:

A strong start to the 2017 season would be a big plus for the Gatesville Hornets, who are hoping to evolve into a title contender in the District 13-4A Division I football derby. Last year, the Hornets started 0-2 and finished 4-6 -- one district victory from the state playoffs.

This year, coach Kyle Cooper’s crew would like to jump into the positive on opening night when they entertain Waco Connally in a 7:30 p.m. Friday collision at McKamie Stadium. Playing in Waco last year, the Cadets posted a 35-14 victory in the opener and then the Hornets fell to 3A regional finalist Cameron Yoe, 69-31, on the second Friday of the season.
