Doubling up

Hornets win historic district title

Gathering points in all but two events, Gatesville High flexed its muscles and showed its speed to claim the District 18-4A championship Thursday night at Lorena. Gatesville’s final point total was 137, finishing 25 points ahead of runner-up La Vega (112). The Hornets scored in 15 of 17 events and qualifi ed eight athletes in 15 events for the area meet, which will be held April 17 at Midlothian Heritage. Katrina Thoms, Alayna Washington and Sage Carson combined to win six gold medals. Thoms won the 3200 (12:27) and 1600 (5:48) and came in second in the 800 (2:30). Washington took first in the 400 (59.1) and 200 (26.84) and added a third-place finish in the 100 (13.30). Carson doubled in the throwing events, winning gold in the shot pout (34-10 1/2) and discus (110-0). The Hornets’ other gold-medal performances came from Jordan Morse in the pole vault (10-6) and Sarah Brock in the high jump (5-2). Other area-meet qualifiers with top-four fi nishes included: Kaylee Jaynes second in shot put (33-5 1/2) and second in discus (104-2), Tasha Thoms second in 300 hurdles (51.86) and fourth in 800 (2:36), Sydney Gilbreath fourth in long jump (15-7).
