Hornets learn valuable lessons

The Hornets made some progress in the Gatesville Tournament streaking to four straight wins among its six games in three days. The softball team’s 6-5 win over Waco Reicher showed how this team can be tough when needed. The Hornets trailed by 4-0 and 5-2 before bouncing back with the top of the order producing. Maci Mathews had the game-winning hit on a hard-hit ball to drive in two runs and the deciding score. “She had been throwing me inside all game and I adjusted to it,’’ Matthews said. “We’re not going to lie down.’’ The Hornets got the final rally going with a leadoff double from No. 9 hitter Kendall Villagrana. To the top of the order and Emma Blakley responded by reaching on an error then catcher Kennedy Berry loaded the bases when she was hit by pitch. Haley Nichols delivered with a two-run double to bring Matthews to the play for her game-winning hit. “We can compete when we get it together,’’ Berry said. “We have confidence that we can get it done.’’ Deygan Hilliker picked up the win in relief. Hilliker struck out two, walked one and allowed just two hits I three innings of work.
