Five Hornet signees

Five Gatesville Hornets signed letters of intent on Wednesday’s national signing day. The signees were Zach Mueller (Hardin-Simmons), Wyatt Tackett (Hardin-Simmons), Parker Floyd (Cisco JC), Jay Hitchcock (Hardin-Simmons) and Kyle Stiffl emire (Texas Tech).

New heights

Kyle Stifflemire led the Hornet signees with a scholarship to Texas Tech University to pole vault. His parents are Keith Stifflemire and Kathy Stiffl emire. Stifflemire has a personal best of 16-feet, 2-inches in the pole vault.

Hornets decide on college plans

Gatesville senior Kyle Stiffl emire first learned to pole vault when he was eight years old.

He picked up the pole and decided to pursue the sport because it beat the other option.

The other option was cleaning the Evant High School fi eldhouse.

“He did it because he didn’t want to clean the fieldhouse,’’ said his father Keith Stifflemire, an assistant coach at Gatesville High School now.
