Hornets Carothers claims spot in UIL state tourney

Gatesville senior Canyon Carothers placed fourth individually in the Region III-4A golf tournament on Wednesday and Thursday at the Raven Nest Golf Club in Huntsville, earning a berth in the UIL state tournament on Monday and Tuesday, May 22-23.

Carothers, who stood fourth after the opening round of the 36-hole event with a 77, held his position Thursday with a 79 and a two-day total of 156.

His total was 12 strokes behind medalist and defending state 4A champion Sam Bennett of Madisonville. Carothers advanced by having the best score for an entrant not on one of the qualifying teams.

While fourth place advanced Carothers to state at the Apple Rock Golf Course on Horseshoe Bay, it was one place and eight strokes short of advancing the Hornets in the 14-team competition. Gatesville shot a 345 for fifth place after the opening round and then sliced 14 shots off that total on Thursday to finish in the No. 4 slot at 676.
