Girls’ soccer falls 3-1 in showdown
In a match-up of two of the league’s top entries, Lorena downed Gatesville 3-1 Tuesday night in District 17-4A play. The Hornets stood toe-to-toe with their highly-regarded counterparts, but a late Lorena score on a corner kick proved to be the difference. Lorena held a 1-0 lead at halftime. Gatesville had some opportunities in the first half on shots on goal by Katrina Thoms and Kamberly Vega, but the Hornets were not able to find the net. Lorena went up 2-0 just two minute into the fi nal half, but Gatesville would respond midway through the half. Molly Hogan kicked true on a penalty kick that cut the lead to 2-1 with still 17:31 to play. Tasha Thoms had a pair of shots on goal in the next few minutes, including one that just rose above the crossbar. Goalie Stefany Ortiz had a brilliant goal-saving play to thwart a Lorena threat, but the Lady Leopards would add a decisive score on a corner kick with 6:32 remaining. Gatesville (5-2-2 overall) hosted La Vega Friday night.
