Erin Necessary is all smiles after belting a pitch out for a grand slam homer Tuesday against the La Vega Pirates. The Hornets’ softball team needs just one more victory in their three remaining district games to wrap up a spot in the playoffs.
Gatesville knocks off La Vega
Gatesville’s Erin Necessary looked for her pitch and she delivered with her first grand slam of her career Tuesday as the Hornets rolled to a 15-0 win over Waco La Vega at Gatesville. The win keeps the Hornets in contention for the fourth playoff spot in District 18-4A.
“It was perfect, I got my pitch,’’ Necessary said.
The big hit punctuated a huge third inning for the Hornets. The softball squad scored 12 runs in the frame on seven hits. Necessary’s big swing cleared the bases of Kennedy Berry, Maci Matthews and Braydie Barnard.
In the inning, the Hornets sent 16 batters to the plate as La Vega’s pitcher had trouble keeping the ball down. She didn’t throw very hard and spun several pitches up in the zone.
Necessary and outfielder Josie Boyd were the only two hitters with multiple hits. Both went 2-for-3 and Necessary had a team-high four RBI. Boyd had both of her hits in the same inning and drove in the fourth run of the game for the Hornets.
