5 Jonesboro shot put thrower takes gold

And it’s on into 2019 sports

Alex Sarmiento said a good night’s sleep had a lot to do with his showing at the state track and fi eld meet. “I just got some good rest and came out ready,’’ said the Jonesboro senior after winning the shot put competition leading from start to fi nish at the Mike M. Myers Stadium in Austin. “I was really nervous, I just wanted to get a good start,’’ he said. You would never know it by his demeanor over the weekend. He pretty much had the same body language for a gold medal win in the shot as he did for a ninth-place finish in the discus on Saturday. “That’s what I told him, this is your last chance so go out there and get it,’’ Jonesboro track coach Nathan Kuehler said. “He was solid from the start (in the shot).’’ Sarmiento finished his career with a 52-foot, 5-inch best throw in the shot on his next to last effort. He had a first throw of 50-01 1/2 and then broke 50 feet again with a 50.09 3/4 effort.
