Robert Lee Powell, age 88 of Gatesville, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, at Live Oak Baptist Church, with Rev. Ken Laney officiating. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery, with Masonic Funeral Rites, under the auspices of Gatesville Masonic Lodge #197 A.F. & A.M.

Robert Lee Powell was born on March 24, 1933, in the Ewing community of Coryell County, now part of Ft. Hood. He was the son of the late J.W. and Sarah Williams Powell. He grew up and went to school in the Ewing community, until the family moved to Gatesville where he graduated from Gatesville High School in 1950. He married Mary Lou Weaver on June 1, 1952. They lived in Gatesville most of their married lives, and a short time at Hilltop Lakes.

Robert was a natural entrepreneur owning and operating Poco Automotive and Poco Cellular for 25 years, until his retirement. In his retirement, he enjoyed his golf cart sales business, Po Boys Golf Carts. He was a member and Past Master of Gatesville Masonic Lodge #197 A.F. & A.M., served as Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas. His other masonic affiliations were with the York Rite, Waco Scottish Rite, and Waco Karem Shrine. He served on the Gatesville City Council, was a former member for many years of the Gatesville Lions Club and was named Gatesville Citizen of the Year in 1994. Robert and his wife served their Lord as members of Live Oak Baptist Church. Mary Lou preceded him in death on Nov. 23, 2020.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Debbera Kay Powell Thompson in 1993; grandsons, Sgt. Leslie (Les) Allen Thomas in 2019, Jeremy Latham in 2021; sister, Jo Alice Allen; and a brother, James Foster Powell.

Robert is survived by his children, Lucy Angelete Thomas and husband, Dr. Bob Thomas, of San Angelo, Kyle Powell and wife, Kelly Powell, of Kingwood, Karen Lee Goins and husband, Rick Goins, of Lubbock; sisters, Barbara Sherwin and husband, Gene Sherwin, Linda Schaffer and husband, Edward Schaffer; brother, William Noah Powell and wife, Virginia Powell; grandchildren, Heather Anne Longo and husband, Dan Longo, Angela Kaye Hollon and husband, Kyle Hollon, Krystal Kay Hall and husband, Russell Hall, Preston Kyle Goins and wife, Kelli Goins, Lexi Thawsha Shawn Moreno and husband, Justin Moreno, Dusty Kunkle and husband, Jonathon Kunkle, Cassie Auflick and husband, Austin Auflick; and thirteen great- grandchildren. Robert also leaves behind his very close family friends, Brenda Powell, Deb Chapman and Pam Duncan.
