Mattie Modene Shepard

Mattie Modene Shepard, age 86, of Carlsbad, NM, passed away in her home early Monday morning, January 23, 2017.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017, at the Jehovah Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Carlsbad.

Mattie Modene Bramblett was born September 26, 1930, in Hagerman, NM, to Leo Isaac Bramblett and Mattie Marsella (Fletcher) Bramblett. Her mother died in 1932 when she was 2 years old. She lived off and on with her daddy and different family members, but mostly with her Grandmother Addie Bramblett. While growing up, she lived in many places in New Mexico and Texas.

In 1946, she married Harvey Haines Hale in Jonesboro, Texas. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Carlsbad, NM, where Harvey worked in the potash mines for many years. Modene worked at J.C. Penny as a professional drapery fabrication specialist. Modene and Harvey had three daughters, Harva Joan, Bonnie Kay and Mary Jean. Harvey passed away in 1966. She married John Shepard in 1969 and moved to Gorman, Texas, where they lived until his death in 1992. Modene returned to Carlsbad where she lived the rest of her life.

After her first husband’s death, Modene returned to school and eventually graduated from NMSU with a degree in education. She taught at Sunset and Monterrey Elementary schools in Carlsbad and also taught in Gorman, Texas. Modene was a Jehovah Witness and enjoyed tutoring young people and volunteering with Hospice.

Modene is preceded in death by her parents; husbands; two brothers, David Ray Bramblett and Sammy Joe Bramblett; and a great-grandson, Harvey Joe Valenzuela.

She is survived by her daughters, Harva Joan Joseph of Roswell, NM, Bonnie Kay Evans and Mary Jean Henson, both of Carlsbad, NM; brothers, Marvin Bramblett and his wife, Beth, of Dexter, NM and Bill Bramblett and wife, Pearl, of Silver Creek, Washington; sisters: Irene Marlett and husband, Jim and Janice Bramblett both of Paradise, Texas; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
