Posted

Lou Cross (L.C.) Mayberry, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend joined his Heavenly Father on Wednesday November 9.

He was 86 years old. L.C. was born January 21, 1936, in Mound, Coryell County, to John and Hazel Mayberry and lived in Flat. He married Mike Nell Poston on Nov. 29, 1956, and they had four children, daughters Terri Lynn, Karri Beth, Kay, and son, David.

After graduating from Flat High School, L.C. received his Associate Degree from Temple Jr. College and his BBA from Baylor University. Upon completion of his education, he pursued a career as Hospital Administrator working in Ennis, Grand Saline, and Waxahachie. In July 1970, the Mayberry’s moved to Austin where he joined Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Provider Relations Representative and was responsible to call on hospitals to assist them with negotiating their fees to bill insurance companies for providing services to patients. In 1974, he joined his close friend Jimmy Barho to work and complete their master’s degree at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in the newly formed School of Allied Health for Hospital Administrators and other medical fields.

He was also a successful Real Estate Broker. The Mayberry’s moved to Hutto in 1979 where Mayberry & Associates Real Estate conducted business and made numerous contributions during many years of the community growth and development. L.C. cared deeply about those he worked with and poured his time, treasures, and talents into serving his church, his family, and his community. He served on the Hutto School Board for approximately fifteen years; served as a Board Member at the YMCA; was named Citizen of the Year in 1998 by the Hutto Chamber of Commerce; served as a Board Member on the Hutto Economic Development Board; received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services from the Lions Clubs International Foundation; and received a Certificate of Ordination in 1972 from Hyde Park Baptist Church as Deacon.

Taking camping trips with friends in the Gatesville RV Club, fishing on the Colorado River, Country & Western music at Mountain View Arkansas, the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Alpine, a good game of dominos, and Washer Tournaments were some of his favorite past times. He enjoyed taking trips with families and other couples to places at Bend, Texas (like Gorman Falls or Sulfur Springs) on the Colorado River to fish for White Bass. Every year he would look to see the best date for trips by the old test of "When the Red Bud's Bloom, the White Bass Run.” Each year he would plan a fishing trip for the Blue Cross Blue Shield friends he worked with which became an ANNUAL event. While his wife was shopping with girlfriends, L.C. and his men traveling partners enjoyed conducting scientific research called “people watching” to determine where someone was from, what they did for a living, and reminisce about old times.

L.C. is survived by his wife, Mike Nell; his daughters Terri Lynn Mayberry Drennan and husband, Doug; Karri Beth Mayberry Sliwa; Kay Mayberry Adkins and husband, Clayte; son David Mayberry; Pat Tims; grandchildren John Marcus Sliwa; Tyler Matthew Sliwa; Kara Drennan Slover; Dana Drennan; great-grandchildren Devyn Patterson; Evelyn Sliwa; Rahely Slover; Keaton Slover; Jade Slover; and a large number of family and friends whom he loved.
