High-speed chase ends in crash

A sting operation initiated by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Offi ce resulted in a high-speed pursuit Friday that ended in a crash just outside the Gatesville City Limits.

Robert Shawn Taylor, 45, of Harker Heights, was arrested for online solicitation of a minor as well as evading arrest and two drug charges.

Hamilton County Sheriff Justin Caraway reported Taylor drove to Evant, which sits on the Hamilton-Coryell county line, believing he was meeting a 14-year-old female.

However, Taylor had been corresponding with an undercover agent and was on the phone with the agent when he pulled into a parking lot north of Evant.

Taylor wanted the female to get into his vehicle to perform oral sex on him, Caraway stated.

The sheriff said Taylor had previously sent nude photos of himself and sexually explicit messages.

When deputies moved to box Taylor in, the suspect fl ed, almost striking the sheriff’s vehicle, Caraway said.

The ensuing pursuit turned east on U.S. Highway 84 and reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, Caraway noted.

Offi cers from the Coryell County Sheriff’s Office and the Gatesville Police Department were notifi ed as the chase neared Gatesville. Deputies set up spikes in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver veered into a ditch and crashed just west of the Gatesville city limits.

Caraway said Taylor refused medical treatment at the scene.

In addition to the online solicitation and evading charges, Taylor is charged with possession of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1 under 1 gram and possession of marijuana under two ounces.

At press time, Taylor remained in the Coryell County Jail on bonds totaling $157,500.

Caraway said his offi ce has been involved in well over 20 such stings in the last 6-7 months.
