Local sailor unharmed in collision
Roy and Julie Hudson, along with family and friends, spent several anxious hours Sunday night waiting to hear from their son, Zachary, who was aboard the USS John S. McCain.
The guided-missile destroyer was damaged when it collided with the Alnic MC, a 600-foot oil and chemical tanker in the Strait of Malacca.
Julie Hudson said she first heard about the accident when her father called about 7 p.m. Sunday. He had seen something about it on Facebook.
“I was upset and crying,” she stated. “We called our family to make sure they knew about it and asked for prayers. It was really scary, especially since my brother was killed at the age of 20 when he was in the Navy (as the result of an automobile accident in Guam).”
