A Gatesville Fire Department truck dashcam caught an image of the super cell that plagued Coryell County and surrounding areas on Sunday afternoon. This photo was taken on CR 139.
TORNADO WREAKS HAVOC IN AREA
A strong thunderstorm moved across the southwestern portion of Coryell County Sunday afternoon causing considerable wind damage to trees and some homes.
At 4:43 p.m., Sunday, June 9, the National Weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Coryell and counties to the west as a storm was observed near Evant moving south. A tornado warning was then issued for the area.
Storm spotters reported a tornado sighting in West Copperas Cove. The event was confirmed by the National Weather Service as an EF 2 tornado.
Most of the major storm damage was confined to the corridor west of Highway 281 and east of FM 116.
Reports indicated that an area on CR 139 near Pearl had seven power poles broken and on the ground. Damage to trees was termed extensive. One Pearl resident said that her neighbor’s home weather station recorded winds near 90 miles per hour during the storm.
