’Tis the season for scammers to victimize the elderly

Posted

CRIME OF THE WEEK

Each year we see more and more elderly citizens fall victim to some type of financial fraud.

The scammer will pose as some sort of romantic interest, sweepstakes or lottery representative, or even as a young relative of an elderly individual requesting financial help to bail them out of a tough situation. Once the scammer is successful, they often have access to money that the unsuspecting victim has worked hard all their lives to earn.

Our seniors make highly sought-after targets because of their trusting, polite, and helpful demeanors.

As if being a victim of a fraudulent scam isn’t enough, many fail to report it because they may not know how, or they are embarrassed that they were made victims.

Centex Crime Stoppers would like readers to share this information with senior members of their families, and in the community. Remember, if there is ever any doubt about a phone call, text message, email, or other correspondence that you or a family member receives, do not hesitate to contact local law enforcement.

If you have any information about any case or any local crime, call Centex Crime Stoppers 24 hours a day at 1-254-865-8477 (TIPS) or visit our website at www. Centexcrimestoppers.org or by downloading the “P3” mobile app available on both the Apple app store and Google Play Store. You never have to give your name, and if your information leads to an arrest, you may be eligible for a cash reward.

Crime Stoppers, citizens, police, and the media working together can make our community a safer place to live. Together we can make a difference.
