Teacher wins shopping spree

Ellen Garcia, a Gatesville resident and seventh grade reading teacher in McGregor, started off the school year with a carload of new supplies and kids with happy faces after writing an essay and winning the chance to pile her shopping carts with whatever she wanted from a Waco store.

The contest was sponsored by the 99 Cents store located in Waco and the winner was given 99 seconds to fill their shopping carts. The contest was designed for teachers to write an essay about why they should win the opportunity to stuff their carts and car with anything in the store.

“Every year when I teach, my kids never have the supplies they need,” said Garcia.

That is why she wrote the essay about needing supplies for the students of not just her class, but various classes throughout the school.

“I just stressed the fact that if I had the opportunity to win, it would be used for my students,” Garcia said.
