Martinez breezes into winning again

District 6-4A meet set Oct. 14

Carlo Martinez of Gatesville High School added another cross country victory to his resume Wednesday with a 16:21 79 time at the Stephenville meet. He won by almost a minute over Eric Reyes of Benbrook in the varsity boys 5K race.

The field included 132 runners from 15 schools.

The Gatesville junior has been victorious as the No. 1 runner in all but one of his races this fall.

  Next up for the GHS runners will be the District 6-4A meet on Thursday, Oct. 14 in Gatesville.

Gatesville’s Luis Macias clocked a 17:23.62 for third overall.

The Hornets finished fourth with 130 points behind team champion Stephenville with 71 points. Jack Armstrong was 38th at 19:23.08 followed by Angel Armendariz 41st at 19:34.04. Abraham Armendariz was 60th at 19:5924 and Morgan Clary took 63rd at 20:06.35.

For the GHS girls team, Vania Martinez finished third overall in 12:16.42 in the 3,200-meter event.

Sarah Denton of Gunter won the varsity girls division in 12:51.82.

Gatesville’s Bethany Penrod finished in 11th place in 13:07.83 followed by teammates Lacy Campos in 66th at 14:30,53, Valeria Jimenez in 86th at 14:50.20, Grace Penrod in 87th at 14:51.11 and Payton Armstrong in 139th at 17:17.30.

The Lady Hornets took eighth place in the varsity girls team standings with 242 points. Glen Rose won with 81 points.
