The Gatesville Hornets (11-13) played strong on Jan. 7, shooting down the Robinson Rockets (6-13) 66-57, in a non-district boys basketball game at Sidney L. Pruitt Gymnasium in Gatesville.

Gatesville’s dynamic performance was led by junior Tyler Shea scoring 23 points in the matchup. GHS boys head coach Brit Campbell credited the team’s dedication and teamwork as key factors in the win.

“It was a team win,” Campbell said. “I was most excited about the three guys on the bench late in the game that didn’t get much playing time. They were just as excited as the guys on the court. That is when you see the team coming together and playing for each other. That is a good sign of a good team.”

The Hornets and the Rockets battled hard for momentum throughout the game.

Jack Carroll came up big, scoring 17 points on the night. Carroll made five 3-point shots and one other field goal to guide the Hornets to victory. Carter Williams was efficient as well, scoring 14 points.

The crowd was electric, as every time the ball went through the hoops the Hornet fans roared. With district play right around the corner, the Hornets are excited to have a big win right before district. Freshman Rayshon Smith shared that the Hornets are “hyped” coming off the thrilling win going into district.

Campbell praised his team for taking steps in the right direction and he sees room for growth in district play.

“Our district overall is very solid; every team is good,” Campbell said. “Anybody can beat anybody and we’re going to have to show up for every game.”

The Hornets will head to Brownwood on Friday, Jan. 14, to take on the Brownwood Lions (16-7) for their district opener. The tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Brownwood High School gym.
