In a hard-fought girls softball game on March 8, the Gatesville Lady Hornets fell to the China Spring Lady Cougars 11-5 at the GHS softball field.

The Lady Hornets' overall season record dropped to 5-9-2 after the defeat. The Lady Hornets fought hard to get back into the game but could not recover from the third inning in which the Lady Cougars rounded the diamond eight times. The third inning would be the last time the Lady Cougars would score all night.

“To be perfectly honest with you, we played six really good innings of solid softball.” GHS softball head coach Andrea Holdbrook said.

The Lady Hornets tried to recover from the dud inning, scoring three runs in the fourth and one run in the seventh inning.

“The best learning experience from it was that we are fully capable to compete with just about anybody in front of us,” Holdbrook said. “We need to make sure we stay focused. I would say that’s our biggest obstacle right now is staying focused for seven full innings.”

Offensively for Gatesville, Raylee Glover was 1-for4 at the plate, drove in a run, and scored once. Teammate Kinlee Gardner went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Kinsey Gardner went 1-for-4 in the game, while Cera Touchet went 1-for-2, with two RBI, two walks, and scored a run. Grace Carothers also scored a run.

The Lady Hornets played at home against Waco Connally on Friday. They are also playing today in Franklin against Franklin at 1 p.m. and Bremond right after to make up for rescheduled games because of bad weather.
