GHS track teams shine in area competition

The Gatesville High School varsity boys and girls track and field teams had strong showings at the 5-4A/6-4A area meet in Brownwood.

The Hornet boys accumulated 81 points and finished second overall in the 11-team field, qualifying 11 athletes for advancement to the regional meet. The Lady Hornets totaled 71 points to finish fourth overall and qualified eight girls for regional.

The top four finishers in each event advanced qualified for the regional competition, which will be Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Boys results

Ashtyn Culley was third in long jump and sixth in high jump; Evan Hanson second in discus and second in shot put; Carlo Martinez first in 3,200 and 1,600; Kyle Shafer sixth in triple jump; Camden Galindo fourth in long jump; Angel Almendariz fifth in 3,200; Luis Macias first in 800 and second in 1,600; Jeffrey Tesar sixth in 800; Jacob Baker fourth in 300 hurdles; Wesley Brown fourth in 200; Cory Burns fifth in 200; team of Ricky Villagrana, Rayshon Smith, Adrian Smith and Baker, sixth in 4 x 100 relay; team of Tyler Shea, Sean Aguilar, Martinez and Herbelin fourth, in 4 x 400 relay.

Girls results

Barrett Boyd was first in high jump and 100 hurdles, second in pole vault; Vania Martinez first in 3,200 and 1,600; Bethany Penrod second in 800 and fourth in 1,600; Lauren Stuard third in 100 and sixth in triple jump; Addison Taylor fifth in high jump; team of Lacy Campos, Paige Sentillas, Boyd and Martinez fifth in 4 x 400 relay.

The top two entries in regionals in each event qualify for the UIL Class 4A meet, tentatively scheduled for May 12 in Austin.
