Hornets football take field Monday

 The Gatesville Hornets opened football drills with more than 60 players taking the field Monday morning.

The Hornets utilized the morning workout for technique and instruction for the varsity and junior varsity candidates.

“We’ll come back in the evening for our first big workout,’’ said coach Luke Howard. “This morning is a lot of refresher work.’’ 

The Hornets coaches ran the team through drills in what was relatively comfortable conditions for August in Texas.

Fall camp practices will be from 6- 9 p.m.

Varsity and JV will also report in the mornings from 7- 9 a.m.

“We still have some position battles at offensive line, running back, and outside linebacker,’’ Howard said. “We are looking for some young guys to step up into backup and special teams roles.’’

During fall camp the Hornets will have scrimmages against McGregor and Fairfield. The McGregor scrimmage is on the road while the Fairfield scrimmage will be at home Aug. 19.

The Hornets will open the regular season Aug. 27 with a battle with Llano at McKamie Stadium.
