Fast start fuels win over Hillsboro

 The Gatesville Hornets got back on track Friday with a visit to Hillsboro.

The Hornets jumped out to a quick start recovering a pooch kickoff and turning the momentum into a dominating 40-6 non-district victory.

Quarterback Wesley Brown had a big night with a hand in on five touchdowns. The senior ran for four and threw another as the Hornets snapped a two-game skid and evened their season record at 2-2.

The Hornets will take on Lampasas 7:30 p.m. Friday at Gatesville.

Brown carried the Hornets 25 yards in just four snaps to get the early lead when bolted over from six yards.

He also connected with Logan Edwards for the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.

An interception by Ashton Culley set up another short scoring drive.

Brown scored from four and Banner Allman tacked on the conversion for a 16-0 lead.

Hillsboro cut into the lead with a 15-yard scoring run.

Hornet kicker Luis Macias booted a 40-yard field goal to push the Hornets’ lead to 19-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Brown added two scores before half to build the lead to 33-6.

The Hornets drove 66 yards in seven plays to push the score t0 26-6 with Macias’ extra point.

Brown completed a 30-yard strike to Trevor Smith to finish another seven-play drive. The march covered 59 yards.

Brown capped the night with a five-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Hornets outgained Hillsboro, 278-226, in total yards.

Brown finished with 14 carries for 183 rushing. Bradyn Culley had 10 rushes for 22 yards and Parker Allman added six carries for 20 yards.

Brown completed 10 of 16 passes for 141 passing.

Smith finished with six catches for 69 yards. Banner Allman had two receptions for 60 yards. Carson Brizendine had one catch for nine yards.
