Evant girls take second at Walnut Springs

The Evant High School Lady Elks took second place in the Walnut Springs Tournament, Dec. 2-4. They won two of three games, losing only to Gordon 31-22 in the championship game Saturday.

Guard Luwi Rodriguez and center Emiliegh Burton both earned all-tournament honors for Evant.

Burton scored 12 points against Gordon’s Longhorns, and paced the Elks on the boards.

Rodriguez scored five and Hailey Neri added four points.

Evant (3-3) will open district this week.

Gordon rolled through the tournament with three wins and knocked off Jonesboro in the semifinals.

On Saturday, Evant and Gordon started slow. Gordon built its lead to 19-8 at halftime.

Havens led Gordon with 13 points.

Members of the Evant team are Burton, Rodriguez, Molly Waldrum, Caeleigh Burkham, Izzy Gandy, Bree Ramirez, Hailey Neri and Harley Weeks. 

In Game 1, Evant rolled Walnut Springs, 50-25.

Evant took control with a 17-6 second-quarter run.

The Elks kept a solid pace to build the lead to 46-23 entering the fourth quarter.

Burton scored 26 points against Walnut Springs.

Other scorers were Burkham with nine, Rodriguez seven, Ramirez four and Gandy and Weeks with two each.

In a Friday matchup with Kopperl the Elks prevailed, 47-12.

Evant rolled to a 17-0 first-quarter lead and was on top 27-8 at halftime. Scorers were: Burton 19, Rodriguez 10, Ramirez six, Burkham four, Weeks four, Neri three and Gandy one.

“The girls came out really focused and played very well,’’ Evant coach Chad Baker said. “We pushed the tempo on offense most of the game and ran the floor well against Kopperl.’’
