Shelton accepts plea deal

Gatesville man sentenced to life in prison, no parole

Chet Michael Shelton, 29, of Gatesville, accepted a plea deal from prosecutors on Friday, June 8, during a brief hearing held at the Coryell County 52nd District Court.

Shelton pled guilty to capital murder of a child under the age of 10 following an indictment for the rape and murder of Makai “Kai” Brooks Lamar in June of 2016.

Initially, a trial seeking the death penalty was set to begin this August. As part of his plea deal, Shelton will be spared the death penalty. Instead, he will serve life in prison in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice institutional division with no possibility of parole.
